At the core of the program of collateral events is the ROMA CONTEMPORARY Arena, a temporary pavilion designed by Dutch artist Jeroen Jacobs installed in the courtyard of MACRO Testaccio. Curated for the second year in a row by KALEIDOSCOPE, the program will center on debates, meetings, interviews and performances involving the protagonists of the international contemporary art scene. Whilst the last edition focused on the scene of three international capitals, this year KALEIDOSCOPE chose to invite three non-profit art spaces – , Zurich; , Lisbon; and , Oslo – to introduce their own activity and offer an overview of the area they’re based in through the voices of artists, critics and curators. During the three-day fair, the visitors will get familiar with different ways of conceiving an independent space, while getting in touch with the protagonists of the art scenes in three of the most vibrant cities worldwide.

To make it not so sticky it was agreed to name the whole thing “satellite” or something like that. However, a season later the competitors did the same and all the lead was gone.

From André Breton’s La Révolution surréaliste to printed publications offering space for artist projects today, the magazine has served as a site for artistic production for decades. The exhibition In Print revolves around the idea of magazine as a location for artwork and looks at recent instances in which artists have utilised this format from a variety of origins.

Offering a short history of the fusion of artwork and magazine, In Print focuses more on recent cases than those of the past, on publications whose contents are entirely available for handling and viewing by visitors. In doing so, In Print foregrounds the artists’ original intention of choosing such an available context as a site for work and with this intends to encourage participation and eschew the frontal, expected relationship between artwork and viewer.

Taking form and display synonymous with a library, all of the included publications are ordered according to the participating artists’ surnames. While reflecting the library or bookstore, and mimicking the movement typically occurring within such domains, the inventory of In Print will expand over time, with the number of participating artists increasing as the exhibition travels from location to location.

Since the beginning of time, the beginning of art, artwork has taken the form of predictable motifs: Hunting, Religion, Scenic Narrative, Portraiture, Abstraction / Pattern, and Sex.

For eons academics, collectors, clergy and the general public have engaged in dialogues about all these topics in art — except for sex, which remains taboo in public discourse yet vital to the survival of all species, especially man (and woman). Artists have never been shy about making books about sex or sexuality and while these books are often “read” in private, we want to open a public discussion on the topic by looking about some publications produced since the advent of the contemporary period arising with Marcel Duchamp and climaxing with Richard Prince.
